Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress After Deluge of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
